Avis car hire has rental stations at several convenient locations across Majorca, pick up your hire car and make the most of the sights the island has to offer.Palma is the island’s capital. The imposing Gothic cathedral dominates the city and if you visit on Good Friday, don’t miss the dramatic enactment of Christ’s “Via Crucis (the ‘Way of the Cross’). Nearby, you’ll find the Almudaina Royal Palace and Palau March Museum , whose modern art collection includes works by Chillida, Moore and Rodin. Palma is a great place for shopping, head to Palma Avinguda Jaume III , the Passeig des Born and the pedestrianised streets around Placa Major.
From Palma, head west towards Santa Ponsa, then continue along the highway taking in the sandy coves of Paguera, Cala Fornells and Camp de Mar. At Port D’Andratx, once popular with smugglers, now preferred by fishermen, purr northeast along the coast to the scenic village of Estellencs, a Balearic classic of pine groves, olive and almond trees, terrace agriculture and cobbled streets.
The pretty terraced village of Banyalbufar offers a taste of old Mallorca. Park up and take a stroll through the winding cobbled lanes. Just outside the town is the Torre des Verger, one of Mallorca’s most recognisable symbols.
Back on the road, keep heading north east to beautiful Valldemossa, sights include the old monastery and several grand residences,. Further on the village of Deià is perched high on a cliff, offering a wonderful outlook over the sea and mountains. In the summer, this area hosts an International Music Festival, and the Chopin Festival.
Further north, Sóller is a must see. Sights include Can Pruner, an Art Nouveau building housing works by artists such as Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Warhol, and the fifteenth century House of the Moon. Port de Sóller is a relaxed place with a promenade containing plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops. The Tramuntana mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the port.
At the northern point of the island, you’ll find Pollença, a pretty village with cobbled streets and a Roman bridge. Meander through its gallery and boutique-lined streets, or settle into one of the many cafes on the Plaça Major to watch the world go by . The largest wine fair on the island takes place here in April each year offering an opportunity to discover and taste some of Mallorca’s excellent wines.
Meander on to Porto Cristo, and then take a small detour to the Cuevas del Drach, a subterranean landscape of stalactites and stalagmites and five underground lakes, including the world’s largest. From there, head inland to Manacor, before picking up the main highway and heading back to Palma.

- Dipped headlights must be used in poor daylight visibility
- Always use indicators, you will be fined for not using indicators when needed

Child safety / Seatbelt laws
- It is compulsory for the driver and all passengers to wear a seatbelt
- Children aged under 12 and less than 135cm tall must be seated in an appropriate child restraint for their size
- Children aged under 12 are not allowed to sit in the front seat
