Plan your trip to Santorini
Picturesque and romantic Santorini in the Southern Aegean Sea is a Greek island 200km south of the mainland. Head for one of our convenient island locations to pick up your Avis hire car and let the adventure begin.Shaped by volcanic activity Santorini s the largest island in a small archipelago, the leftovers of an enormous eruption. In fact the whole island complex is still classed as an active volcano site. There’s no need to worry though, the last eruption was over 3,500 years ago.
Santorini has a reputation as one of Greece’s most romantic islands. The volcanic activity has created multicoloured sand beaches running down into the crystal clear Aegean waters. There isn’t a place in Santorini where you can’t see a spectacular sunset. The best can be enjoyed from the island’s hilltop tavernas while sampling some of the highly regarded dining the island is rightly famous for.
Santorini’s main town Fira is a collection of narrow, winding streets full of shops and restaurants, perfect for a day’s exploration. Or head to Oia and take the short walk down to the tiny port of Ammoudi. In summer, boats leave from here, taking tourists to the tiny island of Thirasia which offers stunning views back across to the main island.
Art lovers should make a bee-line to Art Space, just outside Kamari in Argyros Canava, one of the oldest wineries on the island. Although many of the old wine caverns have been hung with superb artwork created by some of Greece’s finest modern artists, wine making is still in the owner’s blood and you can purchase some of his excellent vintages after perusing the gallery.
Road trips from Santorini
Santorini is a mix of old and new where you can sample some of Greece’s best dining and accommodation alongside ancient ruins. Head to one of our rental locations to pick up your Avis hire car and explore these highlights at your leisure.Oia
A 25-minute drive north from Fira via the strada Epar sits the picture perfect village of Oia. Famous for its sunsets this traditional hill-top village has a somewhat slower pace of life than lively Fira and is a must-visit destination. Its tavernas, looking out towards the smaller island of Thirasia, are a superb spot for a meal. Oia sits at the top of the mostly submerged volcano crater that forms Santorini. From Oia you can make out the distinctive circular shape of the caldera.
Pyrgos
Another traditional village, Pyrgos, is a short 15-minute drive south from Fira on the strada Epar. As with most places in Santorini spectacular views are in abundance. Head to the charming town square, grab some refreshments and soak up the laidback atmosphere. Pyrgos has a number of tavernas serving delicious local dishes; try the mezedes (starters) such as Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) and Fava me Koukia (mashed Fava beans).
Ancient Thira
A 20-minute drive across the island to the east coast, motor south on the strada Epar to Ancient Thira. Settled in the 9th century BC by the Dorians, Ancient Thira is a collection of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine ruins. An atmospheric site with splendid views east, the ruins include temples, an agora (market), theatre, houses with mosaics and a gymnasium. There are numerous hikes around the site to enjoy.
