A great place to start exploring Toulon is the old fishing quarter of Le Mourillon. This historic area is characterized by its narrow lanes and colourful fishermen's houses. It also has lovely sandy beaches, ideal for families, with water sports and restaurants at the water's edge. Take a walk up to the 16th-century Tour Royale (Royal Tower), an impressive fortified building from the time of Louis XII, offering a panoramic view of the coastline.Toulon has one of the prettiest harbours on the Mediterranean, filled with small fishing boats and fashionable yachts. Take a stroll around the picturesque port, lined with boutiques, and enjoy a sip of local rosé wine on a terrace of one of the bustling brasseries. It is also the place to catch a ferry to the idyllic Porquerolles, one of the beautiful Îles d'Or (Golden Islands).
Toulon has some architectural and cultural gems on offer. The Opéra de Toulon was designed by Charles Garnier (designer of the Paris Opera House). Constructed in 1862, this splendid Neoclassical building is one of the largest opera houses in France outside of Paris. The facades are adorned with statues, whilst the lavish interior features paintings, beautiful chandeliers, and gorgeous design details. If you’re interested in Toulon’s maritime history, the Musée National de la Marine is an excellent way to learn more. It houses antique model ships, charts, etchings, paintings, and drawings.
Toulon is also well known for its traditional Provençal markets. The most famous is held on the Cours Lafayette every morning (except Mondays) from 7:30am until 12:30pm. Here you’ll find colourful stalls laden with fruit, vegetables, flowers, and Provençal textiles. There is also a farmer's market selling only locally sourced products at Rue Paul Lendrin on Friday and Saturday mornings.

A typical Provençe 'village-perchés' it is located high up on the hillside and offers impressive views across the surrounding countryside (especially from the terrace near the castle ruins). The village is famous for flowers, particularly the fragrant mimosa blossoms you’ll see throughout the village. Aside from the view other sights include the 16th-century church, the Chapelle Saint-François-de-Paule at the Place de la Liberté and the 18th-century Tour de l'Horloge clock tower and the Church of Saint-Trophime.
La Seyne sur Mer
Around 20 minutes’ drive from Toulon you’ll find at La Seyne sur Mer. It’s grand Fort Napoléon was built for the Emperor but never used in battle. Today, it plays host to a contemporary art gallery and during the summer serves as a venue for the Jazz Festival and the "Bayomo" Cuban Dance and Music Festival. The district of Les Sablettes in La Seyne-sur-Mer boasts miles of sandy beaches between the Cap Sicié and Cap Cépet.
