Plan your trip to Perpignan
The charming city of Perpignan, in Southern France, is ideally situated just 13km from the Mediterranean coastline, offering visitors a balance of city and beach life. Pick up your Avis hire car from a choice of local rental stations to explore Perpignan and beyond.Although distinctly French, Perpignan’s location just 38 km north of the Spanish border gives it a delightfully Spanish flavour. The Old Town, with its labyrinth of alleys and cafe-lined squares, provides ample distractions to while away lazy afternoons.
To the south of the Old Town is one of its main attractions: the Palace of the Kings of Mallorca which was built in 1276. Arranged around three courtyards this imposing building is a mix of Gothic and Romanesque styles with attractive gardens to explore.
The Gothic styled St Jean-Baptist Cathedral is also worth a peek; built in the 14th century, there are a number of features to check out including an ornate bell tower and elaborate stained glass windows.
For a change of scene, the Arab Quarter is a must; the market square, Place Cassanyes, has a distinctly North African flavour. With the smell of spices wafting through the air and a range of stalls selling trinkets and colourful souvenirs it’s a feast for the senses.
There are several museums to browse including a decent art gallery, the Musée des Beaux-Arts Hyacinthe Rigaud, which features works by big hitters such as Miro, Picasso and Dufy.
Those looking for nightlife should head to Place de la Loge which has a number of bars and nightclubs.
