Grenoble, self styled “Capital of the Alps”, sits in southeast France in the Rhône Alps region. Pick up your Avis hire car from one of our local rental stores and explore.Located at the intersection of the Drac and Isère rivers, Grenoble is a lively university town with a great food scene and exciting nightlife. It’s also a mecca for outdoor sports enthusiasts and played host to the Winter Olympics in 1968. With 20 resorts, including world renowned extreme sports centre Chamonix on its doorstep, there’s plenty of choice.
For a dash of culture head to the Musée de Grenoble. Home to a broad collection of early 20th-century works by artists such as Giacometti and Magritte, the wonderful light-filled building is an attraction in itself.
If you’re looking for a more contemporary take on art head to Le Magasin – Centre National d’Art Contemporain. This huge warehouse, designed by Gustave Eiffel, plays host to many contemporary exhibitions, many of which are designed to complement the cavernous interior.
The Fort de la Bastille, built to defend France against the Duchy of Savoy, sits atop the limestone outcrop that dominates Grenoble and is well worth a look. From February to December the cable car Grenoble-Bastille leads directly from the south bank of the Isère to the fortress. Visitors can explore the historic site, follow the various walking trails or simply enjoy the views across Grenoble and out over the river plains.
