One of the many must-see attractions in Avignon is the Musée Calvet. The bridge took over a decade to build and is a fantastic feat of engineering that still fascinates engineers to this day.
The Papal Palace (Palais des Papes) is the biggest gothic palace in Europe and was a temporary home to Pope Clement V when fleeing the violence of Rome in the 14th Century. Many celebrations and events are held in the palace throughout the year, making it well worth a visit.
Road trips from Avignon
NîmesOne of the closest trips from Avignon is the scenic drive to Nîmes. Make sure to check out Les Arenes, a gorgeous twin-tiered amphitheatre and widely recognised as one of the best preserved Roman sites in the whole of France.
Nice
A little further afield (2-3 hours depending on traffic) you’ll find the capital of the French Riviera, Nice. Well-known for its fashionable boutiques and antique shops, Nice also boasts the lovely Promenade des Anglais. Take a walk along this famous stretch of beach and enjoy breath-taking views of the Riviera.
Marseille
An hour or so southerly drive from Avignon and you’ll find yourself in the port city of Marseille. Here you’ll find an array of interesting monuments, cathedrals and a beautiful beach. Marseille is a bustling city with vibrant markets featuring produce from all over the world. Well worth a visit.
