Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, has a justifiably vibrant reputation. Sitting on the rugged west coast of the island, it is the centrepiece of the gulf of Ajaccio and the perfect location to discover the area in your Avis hire car.A French commune since the late 18th century, Ajaccio is most famous as the birthplace of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. But the area has a much longer history. The discovery of early Christian remains suggest there was a settlement here as early as the 2nd century.
The current city was established by the Genoese in the 15th century and it has grown and developed ever since. Wherever you go in Ajaccio you are not far from Napoleon and a visit to the Maison Bonaparte is a must. As is the baroque cathedral Notre-Dame, built in the 16th century, where Napoleon was baptised. The cathedral houses a small collection of art with notable works by Delacroix and Tintoretto.
Art lovers will not be disappointed with a visit to the Palais Fesch Musée des Beaux-Arts. The collection boasts seminal works by Botticelli and Titian, including Botticelli’s “Virgin and child supported by an angel in a garland”.
For a slightly faster pace of life Ajaccio has a vibrant café scene to explore. Those seeking a shopping fix should head to the Route des Sanguinaires, home to many smart boutiques. At night focus shifts again to the city's restaurants; local favourites and French classics abound, with fish featuring on most menus.

Pointe de la Parata, a westerly drive 30 minutes from Ajaccio via the D111, is the perfect place to begin a coastal walk of the area. Dominated by the ruined Genoese tower the path follows the cape and rewards vistors with a view of the Îles Sanguinaires (Blood islands), whose name comes from the crimson-coloured rock that makes up the four islands.
Forest of Vizzavona
This Laricio pine forest, a one-hour drive north-east of Ajaccio on the T20, showcases the beautiful inland scenery of Corsica. Head for the Cascades des Anglais where you will find a series of gleaming waterfalls. The small village of Vizzavona sits in the shadow of Mount d’Oro, the perfect spot to stop for refreshment and to sample the local cuisine.
Plage de Porticcio
In contrast to the busier city beaches around Ajaccio, Plage de Porticcio offers a far more relaxed setting a short drive, via the T20 and T40, around the bay. The golden sands offer views across the gulf and back to Ajaccio. The resort of Porticcio has many cafés and restaurants to compliment your trip to the beach. History is never far away, Porticcio is also home to the tower of Capitello. Built by the Genoese in the 16th century it was one of the most important in the gulf of Ajaccio.
